Aspartame is a low-calorie artificial sweetener widely used as a sugar substitute in foods and beverages. Chemically, it is a methyl ester of the dipeptide composed of two amino acids: aspartic acid and phenylalanine. It is approximately 200 times sweeter than sucrose (table sugar), allowing for minimal usage to achieve desired sweetness.
